The kohl center is located in Madison Wisconsin. It plays host to the UW Madison basketball, and ice hockey teams. The sporting arena got its name from the United States Senator Herb Kohl. His generous donation helped to create a beautiful arena. His contribution was the university's largest donation in history. He put up $25 million dollars to make the Kohl Center a reality.
The venue was built in 1998. The maximum capacity is just over 17,000 for its basketball games, and 15,000 for ice hockey. The Kohl center is the largest indoor arena in Wisconsin. In addition to the sporting events, the stadium can also be rearranged to accommodate a concert. Seating for concerts allows 7,500 fans to sit in chairs on the floor, and another 4,500 can sit on the two upper balconies.
Notable artists who have performed at the Kohl center include Neil Diamond, Britney Spears and Elton John and Billy Joel. Madison has one other large venue, but nothing as up-to-date as the Kohl Center.
One of the great things about the Kohl center is the student section. This section is called the Grateful Red. The section adds to the home field advantage. The UW Madison Men's basketball team has an outstanding record for home wins. In 2005, a bar and restaurant was added on the second level. That facility is open to major donors.
Before the kohl center was built, the basketball team played at the Wisconsin Field House. The hockey team played at the Dane County Coliseum. Now, both teams share the facility. The Kohl Center was designed to resemble the field house. Fans enjoy the overhanging balconies, which allow for better site lines than many older stadiums. Within the next ten years, the athletic department would like to build a practice rink for the hockey team. Other renovations have allowed for better flow of fans. The Kohl Center continues to evolve.
