
The Minnesota Twins began as the successful Washington Senators. However, in the 1960s, the president of the Washington Senators decided to move his team to the twin cities, thus changing the team's name to the Minnesota Twins. In 1965, Twins happened to win the pennant at their former home in Washington, but ended up losing in the World Series to LA Dodgers. During the 1980s, the Twins moved their home field to the Metrodome, home of the Vikings. During this time, the Twins still faced difficult times, but they managed to win the World Series in 1987, beating the St. Louis Cardinals. During this Series, the home team won every game, a major league first. Minnesota Twins tickets continued to be in high demand as the series went on. This win marked the Twins' first World Series win since 1924, when the team was the Washington Senators. Ironically, the Twins had had the fifth best record in the American League that year. Player Steve Carlton, who played for the Twins the following season, accompanied the 1987 championship team to the White House to be congratulated by President Reagan. When a local newspaper printed the picture, every player was identified by name except for Carlton, who was listed as a Secret Service Agent.
After their 1987 World Series Win, the Twins won the World Series again in 1991 against the Atlanta Braves. This win marked the first time a team who had finished in last place the previous year went on to win the World Series the next year. Once the Twins had a winning season in 2001, they stretched this winning streak all the way through 2006, making that the longest consecutive winning streak since the team moved to Minnesota. In 2009, won the AL Central in a 12-inning tiebreaker against Detroit, but lost in the divisional playoff. Catcher Joe Mauer won the AL MVP, the second time in 33 years a catcher has won the title. The Twins have played their last game at the Metrodome as they are moving into Target Field for the 2010 season.
