Smith was acquired before this season from the Boston Red Sox. He was brought in to fill in the gaps of the pitching staff. Smith was successful in this role, but had some setbacks in the end that caused his ERA to go from 3.07 to 4.11. In 46 innings, Smith allowed 11 home runs, but opposing teams only batted .232.
