Born in Michoacan Mexico, Gallardo bats and throws right handed. He started for the The Brewers in 2007, ending with a win loss record of 9-5, an ERA of 3.67 and an injury. According to Jimmy B, "Gallardo has great stuff." His stats for 2008 have proven that to be correct. Early in the 2008 season, Gallardo has an ERA of .64.

In May of 2008, Gallardo suffered what could be a season ending injury while trying to cover first base.

It is not known if his knee will be ready for the possible playoff games, should the Brewers make it that far. It is certain that Yovanni will be ready for 2009.

Gallardo did in fact return for the 2009 season with some high expectations placed on him by both his team and the fans and unfortunately he seemed to fall a little short. This isn't to say he didn't have a good season though. He went 13-12 with a 3.73 ERA and struck out 204 batters in just over 185 innings before being shut down over the final couple weeks to help control the workload. Though he had six "tough losses" throughout the season, he made quality starts on all of them. He became only the fourth Brewers pitcher to reach an astounding 200 strikeouts.
